Volvo construction equipment teams from Sweden and South Korea have been quietly working with Finnish company Norrhydro to develop an electro-hydraulic system that promises to dramatically reduce energy losses and improve the fuel efficiency of excavators.

definition
Electrohydraulic system is a system that uses electricity to drive hydraulic pumps, converts electrical energy into hydraulic energy, and then realizes various mechanical actions through hydraulic actuator components (such as hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors). It combines the flexibility of electrical control with the high-power characteristics of hydraulic transmission.
Basic component
Power element
It is mainly an electric hydraulic pump, which consists of a motor and a hydraulic pump. The motor provides power and drives the hydraulic pump to rotate. For example, in some small electro-hydraulic jacks, the motor drives a gear pump that pulls hydraulic oil out of the tank and pressurizes it.
Executing element
Including hydraulic cylinder and hydraulic motor. The hydraulic cylinder converts the hydraulic energy into the mechanical energy of linear motion through the reciprocating movement of the piston. For example, in the hands of industrial machines, hydraulic cylinders can control the opening and closing action of mechanical fingers. Hydraulic motors convert hydraulic energy into mechanical energy for rotating motion and are often used to drive the wheels of vehicles or rotating parts in industrial equipment.
Control element
Mainly a variety of hydraulic valves. The direction control valve is used to control the flow direction of the hydraulic oil, such as the electromagnetic reversing valve, which changes the spool position through the electromagnetic force, so that the hydraulic oil enters the different chambers of the hydraulic cylinder to achieve the forward and backward of the piston. The pressure control valve can adjust the pressure of the system, like the relief valve, when the system pressure exceeds the set value, it will open, and the excess hydraulic oil will be discharged back to the tank to ensure the safety of the system. Flow control valves can control the flow of hydraulic oil, such as throttle valves, by changing the flow area of the valve port to control the flow of hydraulic oil into the actuator, and then control the speed of the actuator.
Auxiliary element
Includes fuel tank, tubing, seals and filters. The tank is used to store hydraulic oil, and has functions such as heat dissipation and precipitation of impurities. The tubing connects the various hydraulic components so that the hydraulic oil can be circulated through the system. Seals are used to prevent leakage of hydraulic oil and ensure the tightness of the system. The filter filters impurities in the hydraulic oil to prevent impurities from entering the hydraulic pump and other hydraulic components to avoid component wear and system failure.
Working principle
When the motor starts, the hydraulic pump is driven to rotate. The hydraulic pump draws hydraulic oil from the tank and pressurizes it. The pressurized hydraulic oil is delivered to the control element through the tubing. According to the state of the control element (such as the opening and closing of the valve, the position of the spool, etc.), the hydraulic oil is directed to the actuator. In the actuator, hydraulic energy is converted into mechanical energy to complete the corresponding mechanical action. For example, in the electrohydraulic system of a simple lifting platform, the motor drives the hydraulic pump to work, and the hydraulic oil enters the lower chamber of the hydraulic cylinder under pressure, pushing the piston to move upward, so that the lifting platform rises; When it is necessary to drop, the hydraulic oil enters the upper chamber of the hydraulic cylinder by controlling the reversing valve, and the platform drops.

Volvo is currently conducting customer trials on site that are expected to accelerate the introduction of the system on Volvo Construction Equipment's large excavator platform, which will be launched soon. The new electro-hydraulic system is part of Volvo's electric vehicle program to improve fuel efficiency and achieve the company's ultimate goal of net-zero emissions operations.
